Geography
The teaching of Geography at our school, draws upon the unique nature of region in which we live, married with the outcomes of the National Curriculum. We believe that, as a subject, Geography helps provide understanding of some of the biggest questions about our changing world and the people who live in it.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that our pupils “think like geographers” and, as they grow through the school, their geographical skills and knowledge also grows, developing a deep understanding of the human and physical processes of our world – along with the tools to question, measure and explain them. By reading and creating maps, charts and diagrams, our pupils develop an appreciation of the interconnectedness of the regions of our world, and by visiting local areas, gain a better understanding of how and why places change.
Each year, we pose geographical questions which the children investigate and discuss, and each year we add to their “tool box” disciplinary skills – so that they can delve deeper into the reasons behind such questions. Geographical skills are revisited, as are different regions, so that this knowledge can be viewed through different lenses and therefore deepened.
At St. Martin’s we seek to encourage a life-long fascination with the world and its people – and believe that Geography is a significant tool for doing so.
